What kinds of skills would you coach? Basically I want to improve my shooting
skill, dribbling, and footwork (both defensive and offensive), but is a
four-session training enough for covering all of them?
Ans: What you have mentioned are actually the basic things that I will
and can do very well with confidence. However, basketball is something that you
need to learn step by step, otherwise, you will never be able to be a solid
player. A quick response to you is:
The Normal Mode: I will administer some test and see the level of you, then I
can teach you some drills so you can work on your own in the 1st lesson. Then
you go practice on your own. After you have completed a number of training
hours or achieved some of the benchmarks (such as shooting 70% ) according to
my prescriptions (you can practice in anywhere as long as you find a basketball
rim yourself) . You then come back to me for 2 nd lessons. I will check your
progress, give you some advice and then teach you some other skill so you can
master them that one by one.
4 Lessons may not be enough but that depend on the goal that you aim to
achieve. An 85% free throw shooter requires a lot of extra hard work than just
a 80% free throw shooter.
The Fast Mode: I can teach you drills that can help improve by giving you
demonstrations and training methods in as much as 4 lessons. However, this
mode only suitable for the very smart persons whom have quite some experience in
sports training such as existing P.E teacher or personal trainer. I see many of
the top players they can improve their performance by making schedule on their
own, training with discipline and precision. But for mediocre or average
players, this is actually a waste of time and money as your are just a Peking
Duck that you will never be able to digest what you learn in such time frame.
I think what I teach you is no big secrets. You can find it on internet or books
or etc. It is the same for all sports training, you can learn weight training on
your own, learn Yoga on your own, learn swimming on your own. Personal coaching
just speeds up your training curve or helps you hurdle through some obstacle in
basketball training.
However, personal coaching in basketball can never be given to ALL basketball
players. IT IS A LUXURY. It is like going to
the prestigious International schools, although they charge a lot and produce
better results.
It is also like a fat person who wants to remove his weight. As long as he
can stop eating the fatty food, does some workout regularly, he should be able
to keep fit on his own. But this is easier said than done.
My only hope is that you can be a better player so you can show your skill to
your friends, have some feeling of success and make your life more abundant.
The only thing that I don't want is to stay out of touch after you cannot give me business.
I wish I can hold some low cost seminar eg.$50/head so that in future you can
be updated to some new training method and keep improving your skills at a lower
cost.
But before you can shine as a star on the court, you need to do solo - practice
on your own for many many hours.

Ans: The height of the hoop is definitely 3.05m as the standard. Only that the size is 3/4 of a half court, but it will be enough for you to practice all the critical skills in basketball plus weight training using free weight.
Another constraint of the court is the ceiling height, it is only 15 feet which will means that you will only be able to shoot the 3 points in a less parabolic curve. Actually I have spent tremendous time trying to find a better place but Hong Kong is just too expensive for any piece of land. I searched the many places but nothing is really affordable.
Another bad thing here is you have no way to do the normal 3 on 3 games but
at the same time it send you a very LOUD message: work solo and work your
fundamentals before you can shine as a star.
My experience tells me the most fun or gratifying experience is to see my skill
improves. Many many inexperience players want to enjoy the fun of basketball
only and thought they will improve by just playing scrimmage games. This is just
not very true if you want to be top players.
